Cumberland House Cree Nation represents the Saskatchewan River Delta in Washington D.C.!
The Saskatchewan River Delta - Kitaskīnaw (the “Great River Delta” in Nehinawewin) -
has held great significance for the people of Cumberland House Cree Nation (CHCN) since time immemorial. However, in the last couple of decades the Delta has seen its water levels and flow diminished, threatening CHCN’s way of life along with the wildlife and biodiversity that call the Delta home.
Efforts to protect the Delta is resides with Chief Rene Chaboyer of Cumberland House Cree Nation, who on behalf of CHCN declared sovereignty over the Kitaskīnaw in 2021. Chief Chaboyer along with Climate Smart’s portfolio manager and CHCN member, Nadina Gardiner have worked tirelessly to get the word out and build partnerships that support the Delta’s protection.
In April 2025, Chief Chaboyer and Nadina were invited by Ducks Unlimited to deliver a powerful presentation to the Board Members of Wetlands America Trust in Washington, D.C. Their presentation highlighted the incredible ecological significance and rich cultural heritage of the Saskatchewan River Delta, while bringing attention to the need for protection and restoration of Cumberland House’s most vital resource.
Their engagement with community representatives and environmental groups enabled CHCN to discuss the Delta's vital role for migratory birds and the need for partnerships and funding to support conservation. Chief Chaboyer and Nadina also attended the Ducks Unlimited Capitol Hill Dinner and Auction with Members of Congress and administrative leaders. Through the various platforms they highlighted the ecological, cultural, and economic significance of the Delta to Cumberland House Cree Nation.
Impacts of the trip include:
Showcasing the Saskatchewan River Delta’s breathtaking biodiversity – a true haven for countless species – and its vital water systems that nourish the entire region.
Emphasizing the deep historical and cultural connection of the Delta to Indigenous communities, particularly Cumberland House Cree Nation.
A passionate call to action for continued protection, vital restoration work, and collaborative efforts to preserve this precious wetland.
Networking and socializing the Delta’s significance in the fight against climate change with government officials, funders, and conservation leaders from across North America.
Sharing a sneak peek of a new documentary currently being filmed on the Delta – stay tuned! 🎥
